I have a lot of different credit cards. However, I generally just use a couple of them on a regular basis. Ever since getting my Chase Ink Business Card about a year ago, it’s become my go-to credit card. I use it for pretty much every single business purchase that I can. So, I thought I’d share with you why that is. Maybe it’s the right card for you.
(Note: this is not a sponsored post. I’m just sharing my own experience of the card with you.)
Why I Got a Business Credit Card
I work for myself. For many years, I just keep my personal and business accounts together. After all, a freelance career isn’t always consistent. Therefore, I often had to use my personal money to keep my business afloat. Vice versa, I also had to use business money to pay for personal expenses. It’s never been a problem since my business is small and I keep good track of the financial side of things.
Separating Personal and Business Finances
However, a couple of years ago, I finally decided that I wanted to more clearly separate my business and personal expenses. There were a number of reasons for this including:
- It feels better to have a more professional setup for my business.
- I had finally incorporated my business and established the name of it. I wanted my financial life to reflect that.
- In order to establish business credit, I wanted to create accounts specific to the business.
- Certain grants and other funds I’d applied for required me to have a business checking account.
- I sought a business line of credit to assist me in growing my business.
Also, I really wanted to put all of my business expenses on one credit card. I’ve been good about this in the past, even though I was using personal credit cards. However, I’ve never been consistent with it. I wanted to really establish a clear routine of using one card for business and another for personal. While it doesn’t exactly matter since I do my own books, it certainly makes it easier during budgeting and tax time if everything is already separate.
Benefits of a Business Credit Card
I also wanted to start reaping some of the benefits of a business credit card. In addition to separating out my personal finances and establishing business credit, I wanted to take advantage of:
- Cashback specific to my business purchases
- Business and travel protections from a good card
- Discounts on various business-related purchases thanks to a card’s promotions
- Potential to add employee cards if I scale my business up
Chase Ink Business Credit Card
I looked around at a few different business credit cards. In fact, I got a second one. However, the Chase Ink Business Credit Card is the one that I’ve been using all of the time. They actually offer a few different cards; the one I got is Chase Ink Business Unlimited. Here are some of the reasons I like this credit card:
0% Introductory APR
This card came with a one-year introductory APR of 0%. I appreciate being able to grow my business without having to immediately begin paying interest on my purchases. This has been really helpful for me this year.
Sign Up Bonuses
They also offer a variety of bonuses when you first get the card. That’s always a nice way to start off. In this case, I was able to get $750 bonus cash after spending $6000 on the card in the first three months. Since I was in the stage of growing my business, it was bad to spend that much. If I was going to spend it anyway, why not get the extra cashback?
No Annual Fee
I don’t like to get credit cards that have annual fees. I find that I never reap enough benefits to make the card’s cost worth it. Therefore, it was important to me to choose a business card without an annual fee. The Chase Ink Business Premier is a card with more perks. However, it has an annual fee. That’s why I went with the Chase Ink Business Unlimited card instead.
1.5% Cash Back
You earn 1.5% cash back on every single purchase on this card. The Chase Ink Business Cash card actually has cashback as well. It’s a tiered program where you can earn 1%, 2%, and 5% back depending on your purchases. I usually like those cards. However, for this one, I really like the consistency of knowing exactly what I’m getting back with each purchase. It’s a fair amount and it counts for everything I buy on the card.
Also, I really like cash-back cards a lot better than just earning points. You can use your cash back for a variety of different types of purchases. However, you can also just get a statement credit. That’s almost always what I do.
Chase Ink Business Credit Card Benefits
Some of the additional card benefits I appreciate from the Chase Ink Business Credit Card include:
- Fraud protection and zero liability protection just in case my identity or card gets stolen
- Extended warranty protection which allows me to feel more secure purchasing business-related technology. Additionally, this one has purchase protection which “covers your new purchases for 120 days against damage or theft up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.”
- Travel protections include delayed or lost baggage protection, roadside assistance and insurance for rental cars, etc.
- 5% back on Lyft rides. I have been doing a lot of travel for work. Within San Francisco, I usually use Waymo. Outside of San Francisco, I use Lyft. Since I’m using it anyway, it’s nice to get an additional 3.5% cash back (added to the usual 1.5%) for a total of 5% cash back on all Lyft rides booked with the card.
- Special deals. They offer discounts on various things and reduced-cost gift cards. I actually have to say that I get better business-related deals through my Hello Alice business credit card. Nevertheless, these are worth checking out if I’m about to make a purchase anyway.
