Warning: Contains Spoilers for Territory, season 1
Netflix’s October 2024 show, Territory, has already intrigued audiences within the first week of its release, with many viewers drawn to the drama surrounding the takeover of Marianne Station following the death of the cattle station’s previous leader, Daniel Lawson. Territory introduces the Lawson family and their patriarch, Colin, as the owners of Marianne Station, the largest cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory. The series’ drama begins right away as audiences learn that the station is in financial trouble and enemies are knocking at their door.
As the Territory characters are introduced, it becomes clear that each member of the Lawson family has their own motives for wanting to take over Marianne Station, and that their enemies are willing to go to extremes to steal it from them before the takeover can happen. Though others offer to buy Marianne Station, Colin remains adamant that it should remain in Lawson hands, and one major scene in episode 1 helps explain why Colin views his grandson, Marshall, as the right choice to take over the station.
Colin Felt Marshall Was The Strongest Lawson After He Stepped In To Fight Hank
Colin Had Already Stated Strength Was The Main Leadership Quality He Desired
Though Marshall only returns to his family in episode 1 for Daniel’s funeral, he immediately makes an impression on his grandfather by breaking up a fight between Colin and Hank, a rival cattle farmer. This action inspires Colin to make an announcement at the funeral that Marshall’s ability to act fast and stand up for a family member will make him the next great leader of Marianne Station.
Colin claimed that his oldest son, Graham, was not strong enough to take over Marianne Station after the death of his younger brother, Daniel.
This announcement makes sense when one considers the context of the Lawson family dinner, which occurred earlier in episode 1. The dinner ended in an argument when Colin claimed that his oldest son, Graham, was not strong enough to take over Marianne Station after the death of his younger brother, Daniel. Instead, Graham’s son, Marshall, became Colin’s first choice, causing father-son rifts between both Colin and Graham, and Graham and Marshall in the quest for power.
Marshall Starts To Prove His Own Fears About Taking Over Marianne Station Right In Territory Season 1’s Ending
At the end of episode 1, Marshall leaves Marianne Station to avoid family drama
Territory makes it clear that Marshall was okay with his title as the black sheep of the family, as he had not kept in contact with them prior to the events of the series and runs away from Marianne Station again at the end of episode 1. However, by the season finale, Marshall decides to return to Marianne Station to take up the mantle as Colin had previously requested, but in returning to the family business, he becomes the exact thing that he had feared: Colin.
