Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington explains why he is not planning to watch House of the Dragon. Harington is known for playing the iconic character Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, which he acted in from 2011 to 2019. Harington was nominated for two Emmys for his work on Game of Thrones, including in 2016 for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and in 2019 for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Now, the Game of Thrones universe continues through House of the Dragon, which just concluded season 2.

Speaking with Associated Press, Harington explains why he has not watched House of the Dragon.

In a red carpet interview for his show Industry, Harington explained that he does not think he will “ever watchHouse of the Dragon, and he likely will not “watch Game of Thrones again for very many years.” As for his reasoning, the actor feels that he has “spent too long there,” likely referring to the amount of time that he has dedicated to the Game of Thrones universe. He still wishes the franchise crew “all the best.” Check out Harington’s full quote below:

I think for me it’s just I’ve spent too long there. And I wish them all the best and I hear it’s wonderful and going really well. But I don’t think I’ll ever watch [House of the Dragon], and I don’t think I’ll watch Game of Thrones again for very many years.

This Is A Change From Harington’s Previous Reactions To House Of The Dragon

Harington’s statement comes as somewhat of a surprise based on his previous statements on House of the Dragon. When the series first released in 2022, Harington said that he was watching House of the Dragon and “really enjoying it.” This review came in September 2022, when House of the Dragon season 1 had aired less than half of its episodes. As such, it is unclear when exactly Harington stopped watching House of the Dragon, but his recent statement is not entirely genuine, because he has reported watching at least some of the spinoff series.

Harington’s statement about needing separation from the Game of Thrones universe also seems odd because of the reported Jon Snow sequel series. Though the show has since been canceled, it was not until April of this year that its development was nixed. With Harington originally expected to return for the Jon Snow-based Game of Thrones spinoff, Harington’s seemingly extreme need for separation from the Game of Thrones franchise must be somewhat recent.

Over the coming years, Harington is going to have to work even harder to resist the pull of Game of Thrones content. In addition to House of the Dragon, a spinoff series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is also in development, and expected to release sometime next year. After that will come House of the Dragon season 3 and other Game of Thrones spinoffs, further expanding the Westeros lore beyond what there already is. While Harington can distance himself from the IP for now, he could still be asked to participate in the future.
