Why Was Thor Crying Over Deadpool?

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine

Summary

  • Thor is shown crying over Deadpool in what’s revealed as TVA footage from a future MCU event, while also mirroring Loki’s fake death from
    Thor: The Dark World.
  • Deadpool may join Thor and the Avengers in upcoming movies like
    Avengers: Secret Wars
    .
  • Wade Wilson’s potential sacrifice and future higher purpose are also hinted in Marvel’s
    Deadpool & Wolverine
    .

One of the most curious moments from Deadpool & Wolverine was the footage that showed Thor crying over Wade Wilson. As seen in the new MCU movie, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is offered the chance to join Earth-616 and the Sacred Timeline, an opportunity for him to become a hero among heroes such as the Avengers. However, there’s never a moment where Deadpool and Marvel’s God of Thunder actually meet.

When the TVA picks up Wade Wilson at the beginning of Deadpool & Wolverine, Mister Paradox offers Deadpool the chance to leave his universe behind to join the main MCU timeline as a genuine hero. However, Deadpool’s original universe has been marked for deletion after the loss of Wolverine, its “anchor being”. Refusing the offer to try and save his loved ones, Deadpool defies the TVA, though not before seeing footage detailing a major moment between himself and Thor, a scene that may be teasing the MCU’s exciting future.

Deadpool & Wolverine quite literally has over 100 different Easter eggs, references, and cameos galore. Here are all the ones we found.

Thor Crying Over Deadpool Takes Place In The MCU’s Future

Mirroring Loki’s Death In The Dark World

Tom Hiddleston as Loki faking his own death as Thor (Chris Hemsworth) mourns him in Thor The Dark World

Being shown several sequences from past MCU movies by the Time Variance Authority, Wade is initially very excited about the prospect of being an Avenger, especially after the revelation that he interviewed with Happy Hogan (the first of many Deadpool & Wolverine cameos) and was turned down back in 2018. However, Deadpool then sees footage of himself being held in the arms of none other than Thor, mirroring Loki’s faked death in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. Scrambling to turn off the video feed on the monitor, Mister Paradox confirms that this scene is actually a moment set in the future that hasn’t yet come to pass.

While this could have simply been a funny gag moment using this recycled footage from Dark World, the fact that it’s confirmed to be a future event is intriguing. Likewise, it’s not something Deadpool is willing to give up either, seeing as how he repeatedly questions Paradox about the moment such as why the God of Thunder was crying over him. Wade even wakes up later in the movie saying Thor’s name, a running joke that may be signaling more than Wade simply having a man crush on the Asgardian Avenger.

Thor Crying Over Deadpool Could Be Set Up For Secret Wars

Will The Merc With The Mouth and God of Thunder Join Forces?

Based upon what’s known about Marvel’s future release plans, the current Multiverse Saga is confirmed to culminate with the upcoming Avengers 5 in 2026 and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars as the final movie that’s expected to bring the multiverse to a close in epic fashion. As such, it’s also expected that several different variant heroes and realities will collide. As such, the next Avengers movies will likely be the perfect movies for Deadpool to return and perhaps join forces with the Avengers, particularly with Thor.

Keeping that in mind, the TVA footage could be teasing Thor and Deadpool’s future adventures together. It’s certainly an exciting prospect, especially with Wade confirming in Deadpool & Wolverine that Chris Evans isn’t his favorite superhero “Chris” actor (whether he’s playing Captain America or Johnny Storm’s Human Torch). Instead, it seems more than likely that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is the one who has Deadpool’s heart, especially after seeing this future footage from the TVA where the God of Thunder is literally holding Wade in his arms.

Will Deadpool Die In Secret Wars?

Wade Wilson May Finally Become An Avenger

That said, the fact that Thor is crying over Deadpool in the TVA footage does not bode well for Wade Wilson. Likewise, it’s also concerning that Deadpool’s mask appears ripped while lying in the same position as Loki when it was made to appear as though the God of Mischief had met his end in The Dark World. To that end, perhaps some villain will finally succeed in killing Deadpool in an upcoming MCU movie (such as Secret Wars).

At any rate, the hope is that Deadpool will indeed get his moment in the sun before potentially sacrificing himself. Even if it’s only for one or two movies, seeing Wade Wilson as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would be very exciting, especially now that he’s seemingly earned the right following the events of Deadpool & Wolverine. No longer needing the Avengers as a source of purpose and fulfillment, Deadpool could finally become an Avenger because the multiverse needs him, even if it ultimately needs him to die in the big strong arms of Thor (which Wade would probably be okay with).

How Else Deadpool & Wolverine Sets Up Avengers: Secret Wars

A Higher Purpose For Wade Wilson

Beyond the Thor/Deadpool footage at the TVA, there are other ways in which Deadpool & Wolverine sets up Avengers: Secret Wars. The first is an issue of Secret Wars #5 from 2015, seen among other discarded relics the TVA pruned and discarded in the Void at the End of Time. Additionally, Mister Paradox notes that while Wade Wilson might not be an “anchor being” like the Wolverine of Earth-10005, it seems Deadpool has been chosen for some sort of higher purpose by Paradox’s superiors.

Unfortunately, Paradox doesn’t offer any more details about what Deadpool’s future higher purpose is, but it was the reason he was offered an invitation to Earth-616 and the Sacred Timeline in the first place. As such, Deadpool’s higher purpose will likely become clear in future MCU projects when Wade (and most likely Logan) inevitably gets pulled into the ongoing crises of Earth-616, now that they’ve successfully saved and stabilized Wade’s reality. Either way, Deadpool and Thor’s future moment is more than likely well on the way and will be seen sooner rather than later.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters from Marvel Studios.
