Franchise Brands Continue To Expand Internationally in March

• Chick-fil-A has announced a $1 billion international expansion initiative to open restaurants in Europe and Asia by 2026, and to open locations in five international markets by 2030. In an interview in the Wall Street Journal, third-generation CEO Andrew Cathy said, “We feel like it’s time to continue to innovate and try and test how we will do in international markets so that we can learn.” According to the article, while Chick-fil-A is still determining how many international restaurants it will open overseas in the next 7 years, Cathy said the U.S. brand is planning to continue with its model under which franchisees run just one restaurant, working closely with the company and splitting profits with the chain after paying fees. It’s not the first out-of-country locations for the brand, which opened its first unit in Canada in 2019 and now has eight there, along with three stores open in Puerto Rico. This is, by far, the company’s largest overseas expansion effort since its founding in 1946 under the name Dwarf Grill near Atlanta, Georgia.

Great American Cookies and Marble Slab Creamery have announced a multi-unit development deal for Puerto Rico. The deal calls for franchisees Joezer Serrano Rivera and Brian De Leon at Conceptos Restaurants to open co-branded restaurants in the country over the next 5 years. Both concepts are owned by FAT Brands, whose CDO Taylor Wiederhorn said, “Not only will they be bringing Great American Cookies and Marble Slab Creamery to the island, they also recently committed to opening new Fatburger and Buffalo’s Express locations over the next 5 years.”

McDonald’s began testing its McPlant Nuggets in February at approximately 1,400 locations in Germany. The McNuggets are being tested as part of McDonald’s 3-year development deal with California-based company Beyond Meat. The ingredients in the new nuggets are pea protein, corn, and wheat, surrounded by a crispy tempura batter. The launch follows a successful test run last August at locations in Stuttgart (Germany’s sixth largest city). However, the product’s debut has created pushback and criticism from the vegetarian and vegan community because, according to various German publications, the nuggets may come into contact with animal products, a claim McDonald’s has freely acknowledged on its home page, saying, “Because it is topped with processed cheese preparation and sandwich sauce that contain milk and eggs, and the patties are prepared on the same grill as the meat, it is not vegan or vegetarian.”

Pirtek has announced the signing of its first multi-unit franchise agreement to expand into Canada. The franchisee is Eman AlHindi, who signed a development deal to open locations in the Greater Toronto market over the next 3 years. AlHindi and her husband run a successful home renovation business in Toronto. She independently runs an accounting services business that supports their franchise company and outside clients in the market. The first location, Pirtek Mississauga in Ontario, is scheduled to open this summer. “After more than 3 years of strategic planning and development, we are excited to announce the official expansion of Pirtek into Canada,” said Pirtek USA’s Director of Franchise Development Nick Ridgway.

Ziggi’s Coffee has announced a franchise development deal with the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians to open a location on tribal lands. The development is the first of its kind for the coffee company and will be completed in collaboration with the San Pasqual Economic Development Corp. (SPEDC) with an anticipated opening date of fall 2023. The SPEDC was founded with the intention of pursuing economic development opportunities on behalf of the tribal government. “We wanted to find a partner that fit in and believes in our values and mission to build on the next seven generations of our tribe,” said SPEDC’s CEO and President Hellyaachwehay Quisquis. Ziggi’s began franchising in 2016 and has grown to 70 locations in 16 states. The company has more than 140 locations in various stages of development, with 30 set to open in 2023, including the San Pasqual Tribe development.
