Govt must privatise services it’s unable to deliver: Debt Rescue

By Princess Mahogo

Debt Rescue CEO Neil Roets says government should be honest with itself when its unable to provide certain basic services.

Roets has been commenting on Eskom’s 18.65% tariff increase, which came into effect for the power utility’s standard tariff or non-municipal consumers.

Electricity tariff increases for consumers who pay directly to their municipalities will take effect on the 1st of July.

Roets says the tariff increase will have a negative impact on households’ finances.

“The Eskom tariff increase is going to have a devastating impact on consumers as interests rates are also very high but salaries remain stagnant.

“We certainly hope that solar will help alleviate the pressure of electricity demand at Eskom but there is no guarantees because we are dependant on very few resources in terms of electricity in South Africa and we hope that those hold up.

“Government should acknowledge when they have hit a wall and are not able to provide a certain service and be willing to privatise that service,” adds Roets.

Roets says consumers must be watch their spending habits.

“Consumers must be vigilant of how they spend money and should draw up a budget to avoid overspending.”
