The 9 Best Things to Buy in March — and 3 to Avoid

Editor’s Note: This story comes from partner site DealNews.com.

March brings the (official) end of winter and beginning of spring, which is good news for all those suffering from cabin fever.

It probably doesn’t rank high on the list of shopping months for consumers, but if you’re ignoring March, you’re missing out on some seriously great offers.

Check out our guide to learn what to buy in March, as well as what discounts to expect and what you should hold off on until later in the year. Then read up on what to buy every month in 2022, so you’ll know how to save whenever you shop!

The 9 Best Things to Buy in March

Pi Day Deals

While there’s a National Pie Day on January 23, arguably more famous is Pi Day, which falls on March 14 every year. It’s not uncommon to see restaurants offering specials for $3.14, or discounts or freebies via a themed coupon code.

Start following your favorite restaurants on social media now, especially if they offer pies or pizzas. If they have a Pi Day special planned, odds are good you’ll see it on social before it shows up anywhere else. And check back often — we’ll update this page with Pi Day offers we come across.

St. Patrick’s Day Sales

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t a huge time for sales, but some retailers seize the opportunity to offer themed discounts.

Watch for stores like Blue Nile to cut 30% off emerald jewelry, Kohl’s to knock up to 33% off St. Patrick’s Day graphic tees, and Happy Socks to take 17% off a variety of festive prints.

Those aren’t the only retailers that will offer up seasonal savings, though.

If we see deals like the ones last year, Reebok could take 50% off its St. Patrick’s Day collection, Sterling Forever could knock an extra 50% off, and even Fanatics and Petco could take around 30% off during their sales.

Luggage

Even if you aren’t planning a getaway for spring break, you can still replace your worn-out luggage for less this month.

For instance, we could see items like duffel bags for as little as $5, zippered totes for $18, hard-sided spinner suitcases for $32, designer attache bags for $46, and 2-piece luggage sets for as little as $48.

There should also be at least a handful of March sales to shop.

Watch for Macy’s to offer designer luggage from $76, Kipling to take 60% off outlet luggage selections, and eBay to take an extra 15% off Samsonite pieces. Samsonite could also have its own sale that cuts up to 50% off select items.

Winter Sports Gear

With winter fully winding down, those who love the great outdoors should be checking for rock-bottom discounts on winter sports gear.

Expect retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods to take up to 50% off, OutdoorMaster to take up to 60% off, and The House to knock up to 70% off winter gear.

Additionally, stores like REI will likely have savings for members, as well as discounts on specific brands like Arc’teryx.

Winter Clothing

Even if you aren’t a fan of winter sports, you may need to bulk up your cold-weather-clothing collection. March is just about the last time you’ll see winter clothing being offered up for the year in most places, so pay attention to those clearance racks!

Watch for boots to be as little as $9, kids’ parkas to be only $15, women’s fleece jackets to cost $17, and men’s parkas to go for as little as $20.

Plus, looks for jeans to be $20 per pair from stores like Hollister and for heavier coats to be priced from $30 at retailers like Uniqlo. If you need new shoes, keep an eye on Target to see if it brings back its “buy one, get one 50% off” promotion.

Vacuum Cleaners

March brings the beginning of spring and for some, the intense desire to get a jump on their spring cleaning.

If it’s been a while since you’ve purchased a new vacuum, March could be a good time to upgrade. In 2021, about 14% of all the vacuum deals we listed in March were good enough to earn our Staff Pick badge, but plenty outside of those were worthy offers, as well.

If you aren’t opposed to refurbished models, you can save even more. We saw a certified refurb Ecovacs robot vacuum for only $88 last year. If you aren’t sure whether a robot vacuum is the way to go, a refurbished one is a good way to try out this vacuum type without having to make a huge investment.

We also saw handheld vacuums for as little as $35 and uprights as low as $77 in 2021. If you want a Dyson, watch for refurbished models to fall to $160, while new ones could be as affordable as $200.

TVs (Maybe)

March might not be the best time to buy a new TV, but if you don’t want to wait until November, you just might get lucky in March.

We listed just under 50 TV deals in March 2021, and 20% of those were “best of the best” quality. During that time, we saw offers for 55″ 4K smart sets for as little as $330 and 65″ TVs as low as $749.

The March deals won’t be as good as what we see around Black Friday, but if you need a new TV, you should be able to find decent savings this month.

Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookie season runs from January through April, so if you haven’t ordered your cookies yet, you better do it before you miss out. Fortunately, you don’t even have to hunt down a booth nearby, as you can shop for these addictive treats online.

If you’re hoping to try the new Adventurefuls, though, you may be out of luck — that particular flavor is being hit by supply chain issues.

Seasonal Fruits and Veggies

Buying in-season fruits and vegetables is one of the easiest ways to eat healthy without sacrificing flavor.

In March, look for these veggies to be at their peak: artichokes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, parsnips, radishes, rutabagas, and turnips. And if you’re dreaming of a taste of the tropics, pineapple will be in season this month, so stock up and enjoy!

Be sure to check out what’s in season and local with the Seasonal Food Guide website. Choose your state and time frame, and you’ll see what kinds of fresh produce you should put at the top of your list.

3 Things NOT to Buy in March

Spring Apparel

Buy: In May or June

Why: Spring apparel is just hitting the racks in March, so you won’t find any real discounts yet. Instead, hold off until the end of the season in May and June, and stock up then.

Garden Items

Buy: In April

Why: March is still kind of bordering on winter and spring, so there isn’t a ton of deals on garden items yet. But April should bring plenty of discounts, as it’ll be prime planting season.

Android Phones

Buy: In July or November

Why: New Android phones are typically announced during the first quarter of the year, so it’s too early to expect any discounts. We’ll likely see the first round on the latest models in July, but Black Friday in November is still the best time to shop for these phones.
