Fake Lawyer From Kenya Won 26 Court Cases Despite Having No Law Degree or Formal Legal Training

Brian Mwenda Njagi

Nationwide — In 2023, Brian Mwenda Njagi, a man from Kenya, made headlines after it was revealed that he won 26 court cases even though he was not a real lawyer. He was even able to illegally access official legal systems, despite having no formal legal training or qualifications.

According to the Straits Times, Njagi impersonated another man with a similar name, Brian Mwenda Ntwiga, a legitimate lawyer, by accessing and changing details on Ntwiga’s official LSK account. This included updating the email address and uploading his own photo, allowing him to present himself as a certified advocate in Kenyan courts. The impersonation was discovered only after the real lawyer was locked out of his account.

The Law Society of Kenya clarified that Njagi was never a registered advocate and has no legal right to practice law. They warned the public and urged caution when hiring legal representatives. The case has highlighted vulnerabilities in Kenya’s legal credential verification system and raised concerns about fake lawyers operating undetected.

Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions has launched an investigation into the matter, noting that cases of unqualified individuals posing as lawyers are increasing. This situation underscores the importance of thorough background checks and official verification before engaging legal services.

Interestingly, despite the controversy, Njagi received some public support. Some figures, including a prominent trade union leader and a former Nairobi governor, called for a fair assessment of his knowledge and skills, suggesting that informal learning can sometimes produce capable professionals even without traditional qualifications.

He has since been charged with forgery and identity theft, but has even managed to secure his own release on bail and has continued to present himself as his own lawyer in court.
