Introducing Portfolio Position Aging: Improve

Managing a portfolio isn’t just about picking the right stocks, it’s also about managing capital efficiently.

Think back to your business classes and recall the concept of “inventory turns.” Remember how two different companies with the same dollar amount of inventory could generate totally different profits if their inventory turn numbers were different? All things being equal, the company with the faster inventory turns was more profitable because its inventory simply “worked harder.”

It’s no different with trading. I would much rather have $200,000 of buying power that I could “turn” 250 times per year, than $1 million of buying power that was tied up in one trade for 12 months. As an example, let’s say I employed my $1 million of buying power in one trade and that trade yielded a 50% return. Hey, not bad — a $500,000 year.

On the other hand, with my $200,000 of buying power, I yield a scrawny 1.7% per trade but do this 250 times in the same year. That method ends up generating $850,000 for the year, and that assumes I never increase my position size as my equity grows! So, less buying power, but it works a lot harder for me.

A trade that looked promising 90 days ago might now be quietly tying up funds that could be redeployed into a stronger opportunity. Meanwhile, another position might be drifting toward a stop loss level that deserves your attention right now, not tomorrow.
This is where many traders struggle. It’s easy to focus on finding new setups while quietly holding onto aging positions that no longer justify the capital they occupy. Over time, this can lead to a portfolio filled with stale trades that dilute overall performance.

That’s why we’ve introduced Portfolio Position Aging — a new system designed to help you monitor how long you’ve held positions, identify aging trades that deserve review, and maintain stronger portfolio discipline.  The feature combines position aging awareness, stop loss monitoring, and performance analytics into one integrated workflow so you can keep your capital rotating into the opportunities that matter most.

Portfolio Position Aging is now live for all SwingTradeBot users.
Here’s what’s included:
A Simple Trading Principle

Trading Principle: Professional traders think of their portfolio as inventory.
If a position isn’t moving in your favor within a reasonable timeframe, it may be consuming capital that could be deployed into a better opportunity.

See Exactly How Long Your Capital Has Been Committed

Your portfolio table now includes a # Days column showing exactly how long you’ve held each position.  The column is sortable, so you can instantly identify your oldest holdings and review positions that may deserve another look.
The days value is color-coded to reflect the age of the position:
  • Green: Held less than 30 days — position is still relatively new
  • Yellow: Held 30 – 59 days — worth monitoring
  • Orange: Held 60 – 89 days — consider reviewing your thesis
  • Red: Held 90+ days — long-held position deserving attention
Tracking holding periods becomes especially valuable as your portfolio grows. With just a few positions it’s easy to keep everything in your head. But as your portfolio expands across multiple trades, different entry dates, and evolving stop levels, it becomes much harder to keep track of which positions deserve attention.
Portfolio Position Aging makes this easy by surfacing aging trades automatically so you can stay organized, even when managing many positions.

Portfolio table showing the # Days

Multi-Period Performance at a Glance

As you see in the screenshot above, I’ve also added 5-day, 30-day, and 90-day percentage change columns to the portfolio table.  This gives you an immediate read on:
  • Short-term momentum (5-day)
  • Intermediate trend (30-day)
  • Longer-term performance (90-day)

All without needing to open a chart for every position.  These additional data points make it easier to spot positions that may be losing momentum, stagnating, or quietly improving.

Color-Coded Rows: Know the Status of Every Position at a Glance

Beyond the individual column colors, the entire portfolio row is highlighted to give you an instant read on each position’s status:
  • 🔴 Red row: One or more of your stop loss levels has been hit. This position may need immediate action. Stops evaluated include your initial stop, manual stop, Chandelier Exit, and moving average stop.
  • 🟡 Yellow row: The position is flagged as an aging concern . It has been held beyond your threshold with weak or negative recent performance.
  • ⬜ No highlight: The position has no stop concerns and meets your aging criteria — nothing urgent to act upon.

This means you can scan your portfolio in seconds and immediately spot positions that require attention, without needing to read every column.

Daily Review Center

Daily Review Queue

Every trader benefits from a structured daily review process.  The Daily Review Center helps you do exactly that.

Whenever a position requires attention — whether due to aging, stop loss activity, or a developing risk condition — a collapsible alert panel appears at the top of your portfolio table. This centralizes all active portfolio concerns so nothing slips through the cracks.
The Daily Review Center surfaces two types of alerts side by side.

Aging Alerts

some aging alerts

These alerts fire when a position has been held beyond your configured threshold and recent performance is weak.  Each entry shows:

  • Symbol
  • Days held
  • 30-day percentage change
  • Alert severity
You can act on each alert individually:
  • Click Reviewed to acknowledge the alert
  • Click Dismiss to snooze the alert for 30 days

Stop Loss Alerts

some stop loss alerts

The same card also surfaces stop loss notifications powered by the stop loss evaluator, which checks every active stop on every position nightly.  You’ll see alerts when:

A stop has been hit

  • Price is approaching a stop level
  • A position is both aging and approaching a stop

When these conditions overlap, the system escalates the alert severity so you can prioritize what matters most.

Configurable Thresholds

Each portfolio has its own alert settings.

Portfolio Edit Icon

Click the Edit Portfolio icon (next to the portfolio’s name) to configure:

  • Days Threshold — how long before a position becomes eligible for an aging alert
  • Minimum Change % — performance threshold triggering concern
  • Stop Warning Threshold % — how close price must be to a stop before a warning fires
  • Alerts On / Off — enable or disable aging and stop alerts independently

This is particularly useful for traders who manage multiple portfolios or strategies. Each portfolio can have its own aging thresholds and risk settings.

Alert Severity

Every alert is assigned a severity level to help you prioritize:
  • 🔴 Critical — stop hit AND position aging significantly
  • 🟠 High — stop hit with notable loss
  • 🟡 Warning — aging position with declining performance
  • 🔵 Info — early signals worth monitoring
This allows you to triage your portfolio quickly and focus on the trades that matter most.

Daily Automated Scan

Every evening the system scans all portfolios with alerts enabled.  This happens immediately after the nightly EOD processing of signals which typically finishes around 6 PM Eastern. New alerts generate in-app notifications, so you’ll see them the next time you log in.

Aging Analytics Dashboard

Portfolio Position Aging also includes a dedicated Aging Analytics Dashboard for each portfolio.  Access it by clicking Aging Analytics at the bottom of your portfolio table.

Aging Analytics button

Portfolio Overview

The top of the dashboard summarizes your portfolio’s aging profile:
  • Average Holding Period
  • Longest Position
  • Reviewed Alerts This Month
These quick metrics give you an immediate sense of how actively you manage your positions.

Aging Analytics

Position Age Distribution

A bar chart breaks your open positions into age buckets:
  • 0–30 days
  • 31–60 days
  • 61–90 days
  • 91–120 days
  • 121–150 days
  • 150+ days
This makes it easy to see whether your portfolio is concentrated in newer trades or dominated by long-held positions.

Performance by Holding Period

Performance by Holding Period Table

This section answers one of the most important questions in trading:

How does my performance change with holding period?

For each age bucket you’ll see:
  • Average return
  • Win rate
  • Number of trades
The more trades you track in your portfolio, the more powerful these insights become. Over time you’ll begin to see patterns emerge such as the holding periods where your trades historically perform best.

Personalized Insights

Based on your historical trading data, SwingTradeBot generates automated insights, such as:
  • Your most profitable holding window
  • Whether long-held positions tend to underperform
  • Patterns in your portfolio behavior
Aging Insights

Why Position Aging Matters

Many swing traders discover that their most profitable trades reach their potential within a fairly consistent timeframe.  Positions that linger far beyond that window often produce weaker returns or simply tie up capital that could be deployed into stronger opportunities.
By tracking holding periods and reviewing aging positions, you can:
  • Improve capital efficiency
  • Reduce portfolio drift
  • Identify your most profitable holding window
  • Build stronger trading discipline
The Aging Analytics dashboard helps you quantify these patterns using your own real trading data.

Getting Started

  1. View your portfolio
The # Days and multi-period performance columns are already visible in your portfolio table.
  2. Adjust aging alerts
Go to Edit Portfolio and confirm your alert settings.
  3. Review your alerts
The Daily Review Center will appear whenever the nightly scan detects a concern.
  4. Explore your analytics
Click Aging Analytics at the bottom of your portfolio to discover patterns in your holding behavior.
Tip: Many traders organize different strategies into separate portfolios so they can track alerts and analytics independently.

Final Thoughts

Consistent portfolio review and disciplined capital rotation are just as important as finding new trade setups.  Portfolio Position Aging gives you the tools to track holding periods, monitor risk, and maintain a healthier trading workflow.
I hope this feature helps you manage your capital with greater discipline, clarity, and confidence.
As always, I’d love to hear your feedback in the comments.

Happy trading!
