The Black Watch Talks ‘A Different World’

  • Dwayne and Whitley’s separation surprised viewers but felt realistic to panelists discussing long-term relationship evolution.
  • New student characters like Amir, Kojo, and Rashidah offer compelling storylines that deserve more focus than legacy characters.
  • The revival explores contemporary issues like housing insecurity, though critics felt it could dive deeper into social commentary.

Hillman College is back in session, but is A Different World‘s highly anticipated revival making the grade? That’s the question BOSSIP and Cassius are asking on the latest episode of The Black Watch.

"A woman in a red top stands with her arms crossed next to a man in a white shirt with the number 29. They are outside among a diverse group of people, possibly at a festival or public event."

From Dwayne and Whitley’s surprising split to a new class of Hillman hopefuls, the sequel is serving up familiar faces, freshman drama and plenty of conversation.

This week’s episode brings together BOSSIP Managing Editor Dani Canada, executive producer Serita Wesley, comedian Richard Dogulas and comedian-writer Carl Foreman Jr. to unpack the revival’s biggest surprises, debate whether its new generation can live up to the original and reveal which storylines deserve extra credit; and which might need a little remedial work.

As previously reported, the sequel follows Deborah, the daughter of beloved original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at the fictional historically Black college. Alongside a new generation of students, the series brings back several familiar faces, allowing longtime viewers to see how their favorite characters’ lives have evolved.

For the panel, the return to Hillman delivered plenty of nostalgia, even if the series didn’t entirely live up to expectations.

“Overall, I liked it. I did not love it,” Serita said about the “enjoyable, easy watch.”

Richard shared a similar assessment and noted that he watched the series with his 9-year-old daughter.

“I sat watching it with my nine-year-old daughter, and she looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, is this what Howard was like?’” he recalled. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, baby, kind of.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, now I really want to go.’”

For Richard, that exchange demonstrated that the series could still accomplish something important.

“The show did its job,” he said, adding that the returning characters satisfied his nostalgia, although their presence occasionally came at the expense of developing the younger cast.

As for Dani, a Hampton University graduate, she gushed over the revival’s familiar HBCU traditions.

“Maybe I’m biased because I saw all the ways that Hillman is truly Hampton University,” she said, pointing to details such as freshman curfews that reminded her of her own college experience.

She also described watching the series with her mother, who finished all 10 episodes in a single sitting.

“She loved it. It definitely gave us both all the feels.”

Dwayne and Whitley’s Separation Divides the Panel

Among the revival’s biggest developments is the revelation that Dwayne and Whitley are no longer together.

For viewers who remember Dwayne’s memorable “please, baby, please” declaration at Whitley’s wedding to Byron, who’s also in the sequel series, the couple’s separation derives greatly from the happily-ever-after ending many had imagined.

“Whitley and Dwayne not being together is weird, but it’s also real because people be breaking up,” said Serita.

Richard agreed that the separation was a believable evolution, especially if Dwayne got tired of Whitley’s “bougie BS.”

“Even after the ‘please, baby, please’?” asked Dani.

“That was 35 years ago,” Carl responded.

Carl argued that the separation was actually one of the revival’s more grounded creative decisions, adding that the conflict made the returning characters’ stories more compelling.

He also cautioned against allowing the original cast to overshadow the new generation, drawing a comparison to the earliest episodes of the original A Different World.

“Denise was not the most interesting part of the first Different World,” Carl said, referencing Lisa Bonet’s character. “And I don’t think that the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne is the most interesting part of this Different World.”

While Deborah serves as the revival’s central character, several panelists expressed greater interest in the supporting students and their individual challenges.

Carl highlighted characters including Amir, who experiences housing insecurity; Kojo, a British African student; Hazel, a Christian student; and Rashidah, who faces financial aid difficulties. Carl also reminded the panel that the new series wasn’t necessarily created for viewers who had already experienced college.

“Here’s the thing, we already did it. We’re not the kids anymore.”

Beyond its romantic relationships and nostalgic appearances, the discussion turned to whether the sequel addresses contemporary issues with the same depth as the original series.

During its original run, A Different World became known for incorporating conversations about race, identity, relationships, and the challenges facing Black college students.

“They dipped their toe in the water, but they didn’t really jump in,” said Richard about the new A Different World.

Dani disagreed and pointed to the show’s exploration of student housing insecurity as one storyline that felt particularly timely, referencing recent housing concerns at Howard University.

“That’s true! My sophomore year, I came in, I didn’t have housing, and I lived in a hotel for the entire year,” noted Serita in agreement.
