JAŸ-Z is taking his 30th anniversary celebration across the pond, and Hov himself made sure to check in on the festivities.
As spotted on Complex, JAŸ-Z surprised fans on Tuesday (Sept. 1) when he stopped by the new JAŸ-Z 30 immersive pop-up in London’s Trafalgar Square. The free installation, which runs through Sept. 5, is centered around the 25th anniversary of his classic 2001 album The Blueprint while continuing the year-long celebration of three decades of his music and cultural impact.
Designed to transport fans back to 2001, the experience features televisions from the era playing JAŸ-Z music videos, performances and period programming that helped define the cultural landscape surrounding The Blueprint. Visitors can also shop an exclusive JAŸ-Z 30 anniversary collection along with merchandise commemorating Armand de Brignac and Assouline’s The Book of HOV: A Tribute to JAŸ-Z.
“JAŸ-Z 30 is about more than just 30 years of music — it’s about bringing the culture, memories and moments that made the journey what it is back to life,” Roc Nation Distribution President Krystian Santini said in a statement. “London is a huge part of that story, so taking over Trafalgar Square felt like the perfect way to celebrate.”
General Idea Agency Creative Director Ian Schatzberg, who designed the pop-up, said television was deliberately placed at the center of the experience because of the role it played in how fans consumed Hip-Hop at the turn of the century. “Taking fans back to the era of JAŸ-Z’s most iconic hits has been the starting point for JAŸ-Z30,” Schatzberg said, pointing specifically to Hov’s performance of “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” at the 2001 BET Awards before The Blueprint arrived.
The Trafalgar Square installation is the latest expansion of the ambitious JAŸ-Z 30 campaign. The celebration began in New York in June with immersive pop-ups at Bowery Station in Manhattan and Smack Mellon in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood timed to the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt. The New York rollout also included special-edition Brooklyn Public Library cards, J and Z subway-line activations, exclusive physical releases, merchandise and other citywide programming ahead of his Yankee Stadium shows.
The London festivities have already included another pop-up at Camden Market, which opened Aug. 27 with London-exclusive merchandise, anniversary vinyl, The Book of HOV and an Armand de Brignac bar, along with DJ sets throughout its run.
Of course, Roc Nation has some experience turning JAŸ-Z’s catalog into an immersive experience. In 2023, the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch was transformed for The Book of HOV, a massive multimedia exhibition featuring archival photographs, original recording masters, stagewear, awards and artifacts chronicling the Brooklyn rapper’s career. The exhibition ultimately attracted more than 600,000 visitors during its nearly five-month run.
The London pop-up also serves as a warm-up for JAŸ-Z’s upcoming JAŸ-Z 30 concerts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Hov is set to perform Friday, Sept. 4 and Saturday, Sept. 5, with both events listed for 5 p.m. local time. The shows mark his only U.K. stop of the year and his first performances in the country since the On the Run II Tour with Beyoncé in 2018.
