According to The Washington Post, 20-year-old Haitian immigrant Pierre Damas Bel died Monday after walking into traffic on Interstate 70 in Springfield, Ohio. His family believes he took his own life after losing Temporary Protected Status and being placed under an ICE ankle monitor. And if that sounds like an extreme reaction, perhaps America should ask what kind of pressure it is putting on people before smugly judging how they respond to it.
Bel came to the United States in 2024 to reunite with his parents, who had already fled Haiti. He graduated high school with honors, participated proudly in JROTC and dreamed of studying medicine. After the Supreme Court cleared the way for Donald Trump’s government to terminate TPS for roughly 350,000 Haitians, Bel was summoned to an ICE office and fitted with an electronic monitor. His father said the device left his son feeling humiliated and treated “like an animal.” Bel reportedly begged ICE officers to remove it. They refused. He also faced bullying from classmates because of the monitor and could no longer comfortably play soccer. In July, he wrote on Instagram about the shame of walking through the United States with a GPS tracker attached to his leg despite insisting that he came here to study, not commit crimes.
That distinction apparently mattered very little to an immigration system seemingly determined to make people feel like criminals first and human beings somewhere much further down the list. The timing is especially devastating. Bel had a pending asylum case and was scheduled for another court hearing in October. His family says he feared returning to Haiti because of the violence and instability there.
