As we have seen, mutual respect forms an essential foundation for middle-class healing. But respect is not enough. To build on this foundation, we should recall the Introduction’s survey of political risks associated with middle-class division as a threat to democracy. With this in mind, for purposes of discussion, we will now sketch out a simplified overview of key issues. The aim of this simplified characterization is to highlight a difficult choice that upper- and lower-income workers must make.
