In just about every profession, the better you are at your job, the more money you can eventually command. Professional sports simply take that idea to another level. When you’re one of the best football players on the planet — and your success can mean the difference between a championship run and an early offseason — teams are willing to pay accordingly.

The NFL has also always been a “what have you done for me lately?” league. One great season can completely change a player’s value, while one bad year can suddenly make even a massive contract feel questionable. That pressure is especially intense at quarterback, where teams know how difficult it is to find a legitimate franchise player and are often willing to pay a premium once they believe they have one.

Then there’s the waiting game. Agents and players have become increasingly comfortable watching what the next star at their position receives before agreeing to a new deal of their own. One record-breaking extension establishes a new benchmark, another player jumps over it months — or sometimes days — later, and the market keeps climbing.

We just saw it happen with running backs. Atlanta gave Bijan Robinson a three-year extension with a base value of $66.75 million, only for Detroit to follow with a three-year, $67.5 million extension for Jahmyr Gibbs, making Gibbs the NFL’s highest-paid running back at $22.5 million annually. Still, that number shows just how different the quarterback market is: neither superstar back comes remotely close to the league’s overall Top 10 by average annual salary. According to the NFL’s current 2026 contract rankings, here are the 10 highest paid NFL players by average annual value.

1. Patrick Mahomes — Kansas City Chiefs

2026 Annual Salary: $63.1 Million

There isn’t much explaining necessary when it comes to why Mahomes gets paid. Multiple MVPs, multiple championships and a résumé that already puts him alongside some of the greatest quarterbacks ever have made him the standard of this generation. The bigger question entering 2026 is his health after tearing his ACL and LCL in December 2025. Mahomes spent the offseason attacking his rehab and has made impressive progress during training camp, but Kansas City’s championship ceiling is once again tied directly to how close he can get to being himself.

2. Dak Prescott — Dallas Cowboys

2026 Annual Salary: $60 Million

Prescott has been one of the league’s most productive quarterbacks when healthy, and Dallas paid him like a franchise player because finding a better option is much easier said than done. But the money also comes with enormous expectations. The Cowboys have missed the postseason in consecutive seasons, and Prescott himself has called making the playoffs in 2026 the “minimum.” At $60 million annually, simply putting up numbers won’t be enough anymore — Dallas needs January success.

T-3. Matthew Stafford — Los Angeles Rams

2026 Annual Salary: $55 Million

If anybody wondered how much Stafford had left in the tank, 2025 provided a pretty definitive answer. The veteran threw for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns against just eight interceptions, delivering the best season of his career, while taking home the MVP trophy. Stafford has already brought a Super Bowl to Los Angeles, and after another elite season, the Rams clearly believe their championship window remains open as long as No. 9 is running the offense.

T-3. Josh Allen — Buffalo Bills

2026 Annual Salary: $55 Million

Allen has become the face of the Bills and one of the few quarterbacks capable of taking over a game with his arm or legs. Buffalo rewarded that with a six-year, $330 million extension carrying $250 million in practical guarantees. The regular season résumé is already there; 2026 is once again about whether Allen can finally push Buffalo through the AFC gauntlet and deliver the franchise its long-awaited Super Bowl.

T-3. Jordan Love — Green Bay Packers

2026 Annual Salary: $55 Million

Green Bay made its belief in Love clear when it handed him franchise quarterback money, and flashes of his ceiling have shown exactly why. Now comes the next stage: turning potential and stretches of high-level play into consistent championship contention. Love enters 2026 with plenty of talent around him, but the Packers need their highest-paid player to be the difference maker when the game gets tight, particularly after another postseason ending left questions about whether Green Bay can take the next step.

T-3. Trevor Lawrence — Jacksonville Jaguars

2026 Annual Salary: $55 Million

Few players illustrate the price of betting on quarterback upside better than Lawrence. Jacksonville invested heavily because franchise quarterbacks with his arm talent, athleticism and pedigree rarely become available. The challenge now is making the production consistently match the contract. Lawrence enters 2026 carrying both the responsibility and the opportunity to prove he can elevate the Jaguars from a talented roster into a legitimate AFC contender.

T-3. Joe Burrow — Cincinnati Bengals

2026 Annual Salary: $55 Million

When healthy, Burrow has already proven he belongs among the NFL’s elite. He has taken Cincinnati to a Super Bowl, played in another AFC Championship and developed into one of the league’s most dangerous pure passers. That makes the $55 million price tag easy to understand. Cincinnati’s expectations in 2026 are similarly straightforward: keep Burrow upright, maximize one of football’s most expensive offensive cores and get back into the postseason picture.

T-8. Brock Purdy — San Francisco 49ers

2026 Annual Salary: $53 Million

Purdy’s journey from the final pick of the draft to a $53 million-a-year quarterback remains one of the wildest rises in recent NFL history. However, at some point, draft position stops mattering — and San Francisco clearly decided Purdy had shown enough as its starter to pay him accordingly. Reports from training camp have been extremely positive, with Purdy displaying improved command and decision-making. With the massive contract now attached to his name, the expectation is no longer to simply outperform where he was drafted; it’s to consistently perform like one of the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

T-8. Jared Goff — Detroit Lions

2026 Annual Salary: $53 Million

Goff’s career revival in Detroit has been one of the better quarterback stories of the past several years. Once included in a trade many viewed as a way for the Rams to unload his contract, he instead helped transform the Lions into a legitimate contender and became a central piece of the franchise’s identity. Detroit has surrounded him with an expensive collection of offensive talent, including the newly paid Gibbs, meaning expectations remain extremely high. Goff doesn’t have to carry everything himself, but he does have to keep one of football’s most talented offenses among the NFL’s best.

10. Justin Herbert — Los Angeles Chargers

2026 Annual Salary: $52.5 Million

Herbert’s physical talent has never really been up for debate. He threw for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2025 despite taking 54 sacks, showing again what he can produce even when circumstances around him aren’t perfect. But the next hurdle is impossible to ignore: postseason success. Herbert remains winless in three career playoff starts, and for a quarterback making more than $50 million annually, getting the Chargers into January is no longer enough. The next step has to be winning once they get there.
