Joe Budden is taking his talents from the podcast couch to scripted television. The rapper-turned-media personality popped up on Law & Order, adding another chapter to his recent interest in crime programming.
As spotted on Complex, Budden appeared in the Thursday, October 29 episode of the long-running NBC series. The role didn’t require him to completely reinvent himself, either: he portrayed a rapper whose connection to the episode’s victim brings two detectives to his door.
His character knows the victim through the art world and has some information that could help move the investigation along. Despite being questioned, he has an alibi and keeps his composure throughout the exchange. It’s a brief appearance, but viewers accustomed to watching Joe debate music and air out industry grievances get to see him work from a different kind of script.
Budden also joins a lengthy list of Hip-Hop artists who have entered the Law & Order universe. Across the original series and its spinoffs, rappers including Ludacris, Method Man, Snoop Dogg, Big Boi and 2 Chainz have made appearances. For Joe, the cameo offers a chance to stretch beyond the commentary that has become his calling card.
Joe Budden Has A Connection With The Law & Order’s Creator
The appearance also comes with an existing connection to the franchise. Earlier this year, Budden partnered with Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment, Advance Local’s Headline Studio and Prime Crime Productions for Crime in America with Joe Budden. The true-crime video podcast premiered August 11, introducing a more reporting-focused format than fans typically get from his flagship show.
Instead of sorting through rap beefs and new releases, Budden connected with local journalists covering criminal cases nationwide. The concept centered on developing stories, examining the available facts, unanswered questions, and the people affected while cases were still unfolding. Wolf Entertainment brought its crime-programming experience, while Advance Local’s network supplied access to reporters familiar with the stories.
However, that weekly rollout appears to have gone quiet. Although Crime in America was promoted as a Tuesday release, its public Apple Podcasts listing currently shows four full episodes, with the most recent dated September 1. As of October 30, no newer installments appear there. That leaves a noticeable gap for a show introduced as a weekly series, although the release history alone does not establish that the project has been canceled.
The early reception wasn’t entirely smooth, either. According to HotNewHipHop, Budden addressed criticism following the premiere and welcomed feedback as the show found its footing. His latest television appearance puts him back in Wolf’s crime-entertainment world, this time as a character in an investigation.
Whether this leads to more acting opportunities remains to be seen, but Joe can now add a Law & Order cameo to his résumé alongside his music and podcasting work.
