It’s undeniable that Hip-Hop culture owes a great deal to the South, and part of that is thanks to Master P. The New Orleans, Louisiana native helped put his city on the map in the 1990s with No Limit Records, making his brand known in music and later in film and other business endeavors. And he sat down with veteran comedian Rickey Smiley for the latest episode of Rickey Smiley On The Spot to talk about it all.
Master P was pointedly frank about his start at 19 in the Bay Area, opening a record store in Richmond, California, and taking what he learned back to New Orleans to create No Limit Records, including his meeting with the late Michael Jackson’s attorney to get the knowledge to create the now-historic 85/15 deal he would employ.
“That was the best $25,000 I ever spent,” Master P shared.
The “Ice Cream Man” also got personal about how his fame and philanthropy have caused him some internal strife.
“You know, I lost myself trying to take care of so many people, whether family or friends,” he began. “But I had to learn a lesson, that I’m not God. So I don’t give people stuff no more Rickey; I pray on it…Everybody love you when you say, “Yeah.” Say “No” one time. You’re the worst person in the world.”
He expanded on that further by sharing a story about how his grandmother got upset with him after he fired his uncle from his company.
“As being a boss sometimes, you gotta do things you don’t wanna do, and that’s family members that mess up the business.” The situation got resolved with a laugh after Master P explained what keeping his uncle on would cost them.
Rickey Smiley took out some time to ask another question that’s been on the minds of fans, about his brother C-Murder, who has been serving a life sentence for murder since 2009.
“He’s in a bad place, but he’s holding his head up. He’s an innocent man; he’s been fighting the case, but he’s in Louisiana, man. It get real,” the “I’m Bout It” rapper replied.
