Michael B. Jordan stepped out for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opening Night Gala on September 19, looking noticeably different from the ultra-crisp version of the actor fans are accustomed to seeing. Jordan, who is one of the cover stars for Vogue‘s October issue, attended the star-studded fashion event alongside names including Dua Lipa, Dakota Johnson and Irina Shayk. But while plenty of attention was paid to the fashion, Black social media quickly found something else to discuss: MBJ’s hair.
A photo of Jordan circulated on X, with users pointing out that the actor appeared to have skipped the fresh fade and razor-sharp lineup generally expected before a major red-carpet appearance. The viral post helped kick off the discussion, and what could have just been jokes about one celebrity’s haircut soon became a much more interesting debate about Black men, barbershops and our definition of looking “presentable.”
For plenty of Black men, getting a haircut before something important is practically muscle memory. A wedding coming up? Get a cut. First date? Get a cut. Job interview? Definitely get a cut. Awards show or fashion event? You better know where your barber is. The shape-up (sometimes called a lineup or edge-up) creates those sharp, defined edges around the hairline that have become a staple of Black men’s grooming, to the point that hairstyle guides routinely describe it as one of the defining elements of contemporary Black men’s cuts.
That helps explain one side of the MBJ conversation. To some people, showing up to an event as prestigious as the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opening Night Gala without a fresh cut is no different than wearing wrinkled clothes or beat-up shoes. The barber appointment is part of getting dressed. And when somebody like Jordan — whose usual short haircut and clean lineup have basically become part of his signature look — lets the edges grow in, people immediately notice. Even online discussions about Black men’s hair frequently describe the lineup as the finishing touch that makes a cut look polished.
But the other side of the debate asks a pretty reasonable question: Why does a Black man’s natural hairline automatically mean he looks unkempt? Jordan’s hair wasn’t dirty, wild or neglected. His hairline simply wasn’t carved into the unusually precise straight lines we’re accustomed to seeing on Black male celebrities. One recent conversation among Black men about shape-ups raised that exact issue, with users questioning why they had become conditioned to expect a perfectly straight hairline every couple of weeks instead of occasionally letting their natural hairlines grow.
And that expectation is relatively culturally specific. Black men have spent decades turning the barbershop into much more than a place to lose a little hair; it is a community space, a ritual, and in many cases, part of how men prepare themselves to face the world. The shape-up became such an ingrained part of that ritual that going without one can sometimes read as unfinished — even when there is objectively nothing wrong with the person’s hair. Another online discussion about the history of shape-ups noted how much more common sharply squared hairlines became in the latter decades of the 20th century compared with photographs of earlier generations of Black men, many of whom wore noticeably more natural hairlines.
There is also the question of whether maintaining that standard is even necessary — or healthy for everyone’s hairline. Men who prefer shape-ups certainly aren’t doing anything wrong, and there is something undeniably satisfying about leaving the chair with that fresh-cut feeling. But some men intentionally avoid aggressive lineups because repeatedly cutting behind the natural hairline can make the forehead appear pushed back as the cut grows out. The growing conversation around more natural edges suggests that “clean” doesn’t necessarily have to mean geometrically perfect.
Maybe that is why a seemingly insignificant Michael B. Jordan photo sparked such a lively conversation. Nobody is campaigning to shut down Black barbershops, and a fresh lineup is probably never going out of style. But perhaps every wedding, red carpet, vacation and random Tuesday doesn’t require one either. If one of Hollywood’s most recognizable — and famously well-groomed — leading men can walk into the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opening Night Gala without freshly drawn edges, maybe Black men can occasionally give themselves permission to let the hairline breathe too.
