Nike’s New “Shoe Dog” Mascot Looks Awfully Polo Bear’ish

Nike might have a new dog in the fight, but sneakerheads and fashion fans have probably seen this trick somewhere before.

According to Sneaker News, the Swoosh has a new character popping up on an upcoming kids hoodie, a small terrier that has already been dubbed “Shoe Dog.” The four-legged fashion plate is standing upright with his hands tucked into his pockets while rocking Nike from head to toe, including a “Just Do It” cap, Swoosh hoodie, matching sweats and a pair of Air Force 1s. Cute? Absolutely. Familiar? Man, listen.

The immediate comparison is Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bear, the ridiculously well-dressed teddy that has become almost as recognizable to Polo heads as the brand’s signature pony. The character officially arrived in 1991, but its roots go back a year earlier when Ralph Lauren and his brother Jerry received customized Steiff teddy bears dressed in clothing inspired by their personal styles. Ralph apparently liked the idea enough to bring the bear into the Ralph Lauren universe.

The first official Polo Bear was a limited-edition Steiff teddy known as the “Preppy Bear.” Only 200 were made, and they reportedly sold out at Ralph Lauren’s Madison Avenue flagship in one weekend. The illustrated version soon began appearing across T-shirts, jackets, ties and other pieces, followed in 1992 by the now-famous Polo Bear sweater. Over the ensuing decades Ralph has dressed the bear as everything from a martini-sipping gentleman and Ivy League prep to a skier, outdoorsman and Purple Label-level flexer.

That history is why Nike’s newest pup is generating some side-eye. Sneaker News questioned whether the design is an homage or simply getting a little too close to Ralph’s homework, especially considering Nike hasn’t traditionally built its apparel identity around a recurring dressed-up character in quite the same way. There is also a possible connection to artist Phillip Banks’ viral “Chill Guy” character, another hands-in-the-pockets canine who became a meme sensation beginning in 2023, though the resemblance to the Polo Bear’s fashion-first presentation is difficult to ignore.

The timing is interesting for another reason. Nike has spent the last few years trying to regain some of the heat it once seemed to generate automatically. The company has lost footwear market share while competitors including adidas, Hoka and On have gained ground, and CEO Elliott Hill has been tasked with leading a broader turnaround centered on stronger product innovation, healthier retail partnerships and renewed energy around sport.

“Shoe Dog” shouldn’t be mistaken for Nike suddenly moving away from sports; Hill’s larger strategy has actually put performance and core categories such as running and soccer back near the center of the conversation. But a character like this could give Nike another way to connect with consumers outside of competition. Ralph Lauren figured out decades ago that a mascot could turn clothing into character, nostalgia and collectible culture. A Nike dog rotating through classic sneakers and different fits could theoretically do the same thing, giving the Swoosh a lifestyle device that works whether somebody knows last night’s score or not.

For now, however, don’t start building the kennel. Only the kids hoodie has surfaced, and Nike hasn’t confirmed whether “Shoe Dog” will become a recurring character or remain a one-off graphic. The hoodie is expected to arrive during the Holiday 2026 season, though an exact release date and price have yet to be announced.

Keep it locked to Nike for availability, and somebody might want to make sure the Polo Bear hasn’t called his lawyers yet.
