For JAŸ-Z, 2026 has looked a lot like one long celebration of a career that helped reshape Hip-Hop. This year marked the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, giving Hov a perfect excuse to revisit two of the most important records in his catalog. Reasonable Doubt officially turned 30 on June 25, while The Blueprint, originally released September 11, 2001, hit the quarter-century mark earlier this month.
To celebrate, JAŸ-Z did a whole lot more than throw up a couple of nostalgic Instagram posts. Roc Nation rolled out immersive Reasonable Doubt pop-ups in New York featuring archival material, exclusive merchandise, memorabilia and other pieces of Hov history. Then came a massive three-night Yankee Stadium run in July, with the July 10 show built around Reasonable Doubt and the July 11 performance celebrating The Blueprint. The shows drew guests including Beyoncé, Nas, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Pharrell, and Slick Rick, turning the anniversaries into full-blown events.
All of that looking backward makes the timing of HBO’s JAŸ-Z In 8 feel especially fitting. The eight-part documentary series puts JAŸ-Z across from longtime friend and legendary producer Rick Rubin for hours of conversation about his music, upbringing, creative process and the experiences hiding behind some of his most famous lyrics. Rubin also directed the project — his documentary directorial debut — while Hov, Rubin and Daniel Kaluuya are among its executive producers.
The first two chapters debuted on Friday, September 18, on HBO and HBO Max. From here, two new episodes arrive every Friday, with Chapters Three and Four coming September 25, Five and Six on October 2 and the final two episodes dropping October 9. The opening chapter moves through songs including “Intro” from The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, “Meet the Parents,” “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “I Love the Dough,” and “What More Can I Say,” using the records as jumping-off points for Hov to tell the stories surrounding them.
And only two episodes in, there are already quite a few pieces of JAŸ-Z history worth revisiting.
JAŸ-Z’s Mom Helped Introduce Him To Hip-Hop
Before Gloria Carter became a familiar figure to JAŸ-Z fans through songs like “December 4th” and “Smile,” she played another important role in her son’s story: helping introduce him to rap. Hov recalled hearing The Fatback Band’s “King Tim III (Personality Jock)” through his mother’s record collection while growing up in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects. The 1979 record is frequently cited among the earliest commercially released rap songs, and hearing that style of music helped grab a young Shawn Carter’s attention.
Reasonable Doubt Really Was Supposed To Be His Only Album
It sounds crazy knowing how much music came afterward, but JAŸ-Z again confirms that he originally imagined Reasonable Doubt as his first and last album. He tells Rubin he wasn’t particularly comfortable with everything that came with being a recording artist—shooting music videos, doing interviews, and constantly putting himself in front of people—describing himself as an introvert at the time. His goal was more about getting an album out, hopefully going gold and using the opportunity to build a business. Obviously, once Reasonable Doubt opened the door, those plans changed significantly.
Jaz-O’s Record Deal Showed Him Rap Could Become A Real Business
JAŸ-Z also spends time talking about mentor and early collaborator Jaz-O, whose career helped Hov see possibilities beyond simply being good at rapping. According to JAŸ-Z, watching Jaz-O land a reported $400,000 deal with EMI was eye-opening because it showed him that somebody from his world could actually make serious money through music. It helped turn Hip-Hop from something he enjoyed doing into something that could potentially become a livelihood — and eventually a business.
He Removed A Biggie Line From “Brooklyn’s Finest” Because Of The Coastal Beef
One of the more fascinating behind-the-scenes stories involved The Notorious B.I.G. and “Brooklyn’s Finest.” JAŸ-Z says Biggie originally had a reference to California in his verse, but Hov removed it because he didn’t want their collaboration pulled into the increasingly dangerous East Coast-West Coast conflict. The decision is particularly interesting in hindsight, considering how closely Biggie’s name would soon become connected to the feud with Tupac Shakur and Death Row Records. It shows that even before the rivalry reached its tragic conclusion, JAŸ-Z was conscious of how a single lyric could be interpreted.
JAŸ-Z Still Thinks He Made Some Major Mistakes With The Black Album
Even one of JAŸ-Z’s most celebrated albums isn’t safe from Hov’s own criticism. Looking back at 2003’s The Black Album, he says there were several decisions he would change, including believing “Encore” should have been the album’s first single instead of “Change Clothes.” He also thinks “What More Can I Say” would have been a stronger closing track than “My 1st Song,” and recalled allowing differing opinions around him to affect some of those choices. For an album that was marketed at the time as his grand retirement statement and ultimately became one of his defining projects, hearing JAŸ-Z openly dissect what he believes he got wrong makes the story even more interesting.
