With a little over two months until the November midterm elections, President Donald Trump is now focusing his attention of the number of federal holidays. His proposal to limit the amount has drawn fierce criticism from the public.
Trump took to his Truth Social media platform to bemoan how many federal holidays American citizens have, claiming they’re adding to the country’s unstable economy and that workers don’t want them as well.
His comments were posted two days after another press event in the Oval Office with several members of his cabinet. During that event, Medicare/Medicaid Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke about Social Security and suggested that if Americans held off gaining their benefits for another year, the nation would see a $1 trillion dollar boost.
Trump’s position is another reversal of his previous actions surrounding federal holidays – last December, he signed an executive order that designated Christmas Eve and December 26.
What has raised eyebrows about his new call for cutting federal holidays is the timing. He called for less holidays last May, and after Juneteenth. “There are not enough days left in the year. We were Workers then, and we are Workers now!”, he wrote. There are currently 12 established federal holidays on the calendar.
Critics immediately blasted Trump for his comments, pointing to the gross amount of spending tied to the war in Iran as his administration has sought more funding in recent weeks.
They also raised point on how the cost of living has risen in contrast to Trump’s campaign promises back in 2024.
Democratic Congressman Shri Thanedar pointedly wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, He went from, “Make America Great Again,” to, “You peasants need to worker harder and longer hours to bail out my failing economy.”
Others also ripped the president for being tone-deaf about workers and holidays, particularly noting how he
has spent a copious amount of time golfing each weekend – which is at a cost to taxpayers.
