Tupac Shakur wasn’t just thinking about the next album, movie or hit record. The late rapper was also plotting his next business move, and it involved food, family, culture and a whole lot of good vibes. Here’s the story behind Tupac’s cafe dreams.

Before Tupac’s untimely death in 1996, the entertainer had already sketched out plans for his own restaurant called Powamekka Café. According to his handwritten notes recently shared by Hip Hop N More, the spot was supposed to be “a passionate paradise 4 people with power 2 play and parlay.” Basically, Pac wanted a place where people could eat, connect and escape the chaos of the outside world.

And this was not some random restaurant idea scribbled on the back of a napkin. Tupac had a full vision for Powamekka — including the menu, branding and atmosphere. He imagined it as a hideaway for people looking to “escape the worldz cold reality,” with Italian, Southern and Creole food inspired by generations of recipes and traditions.

His plans eventually became real, even if he was not around to see them.

In 2017, Tupac’s website notes that his estate teamed up with Sweet Chick — the Lower East Side restaurant co-owned by John Seymore and Nas — to transform the space into Powamekka Café for three nights. The pop-up coincided with Tupac’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The menu brought some of Tupac’s favorite foods to life — including meatloaf, gumbo and his cousin Jamala’s famous fried chicken wings. The restaurant itself was transformed with childhood photographs, pages from Tupac’s notebooks and rare music memorabilia.

Billboard reported that Seymore was stunned when he first saw Tupac’s original plans. The rapper had thought through so many details that the restaurateur could see just how far ahead of his time Pac really was.

The pop-up also included a limited-edition Tupac by VLONE collection, showing that the Powamekka concept was bigger than food. It was about stepping into Tupac’s world through music, fashion, food and community.

That is what makes Powamekka so fascinating. Tupac was already thinking beyond being a rapper. His notebooks showed an artist imagining an entire lifestyle brand before that was even the language people used for it.

The dream may have started on lined paper, but decades later, Powamekka became something people could actually walk into, sit down in and experience.

Should Tupac’s estate bring back Powamekka Cafe for good? Comment your thoughts on this little known hip hop fact below.
