Victoria Monét is more than a decade strong in the game and while she’s known for her melodic R&B music and many accolades she’s accumulated along the way, many people may not know that a Hip-Hop legend actually helped kickstart her Grammy Award winning career.
In a recent interview on the Jennifer Hudson Show, the Southern songstress revealed that before she became a well-known name in the music game, it was non other than Nas who helped put her on the map as he included her vocals on his 10th studio album, Life Is Good.
Explaining that she was trying to carve a niche out for herself as a chorus and hook singer to help her launch her solo career (a la Bruno Mars), Monét said that she eventually landed in the studio with Nas for the song “You Wouldn’t Understand,” which Nas ultimately kept on his album.
“Around the industry, I became like the girl people would call for hooks, and so, one of those people was Nas. And so I went in that studio, I tried to sing it as good as I can, and he kept me on his Life Is Good album.”
Not only did the Queensbridge King keep her on his album, but he even took her on stage with him to perform on The Arsenio Hall Show in 2013.
“I was like so thankful. So, along the way there were plenty of artists who saw me and was like, you got this, very encouraging, and that was really helpful to build confidence.”
A year later she released her debut EP, Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1 and the rest is music history.
Just goes to show that even the little steps you take in life can add up to one or two huge leaps when you least expect it.
