The cast and makers of Ramayana made a strong impression at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, offering fresh insights into one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious mythological spectacles. Sharing the stage with director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra, actor Yash came out firmly in support of co-star Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama, praising the actor’s sincerity and dedication to the role.

Yash praises Ranbir Kapoor’s commitment to Lord Rama

Speaking during the panel discussion, Yash addressed the challenges of bringing one of Indian mythology’s most revered figures to life on screen. According to The Telegraph, the actor said, “Nobody in this world can come and say, ‘I have the virtue to play Lord Rama’. The fact that he (Ranbir) said the same says it all. He is a fabulous actor. It’s not easy to play Lord Rama and the way he has really worked, huge respect to him.”

Ranbir’s casting as Lord Rama had sparked debate when the film’s first teaser was unveiled earlier this year. While many praised his regal appearance, some questioned whether the 43-year-old actor looked convincing enough to portray the younger years of the character.

Responding to those concerns, Yash revealed that Ranbir had undergone an extensive physical transformation for the role and urged audiences to reserve judgement until they watched the finished film.

“He has worked tremendously on himself physically. You will see a beautiful Rama with great intent and great sacrifice,” Yash said, expressing confidence that Ranbir’s performance would resonate with audiences.

Ranbir calls the role a blessing

Ranbir Kapoor also reflected on the emotional journey of accepting one of the most iconic roles in Indian storytelling. The actor admitted that his first reaction was one of self-doubt, questioning whether he was worthy of portraying Lord Rama.

However, those doubts gradually gave way to gratitude and responsibility. Ranbir described the opportunity as a blessing and said he viewed the role as much more than a career milestone.

He noted that Lord Rama has served as a moral compass for millions of people across generations for over 4,000 years, representing values such as courage, compassion, forgiveness and righteousness. According to Ranbir, everyone associated with the project has approached the film with the shared goal of presenting the epic as authentically and respectfully as possible.

The Comic-Con session had also been expected to feature the worldwide launch of Ramayana’s much-awaited trailer. However, producer Namit Malhotra announced that the unveiling had been postponed following Sony Pictures joining the project as the film’s international distributor. While no revised launch date was announced, the makers indicated that the collaboration marks another significant milestone in the film’s global rollout.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is being mounted as a two-part cinematic epic. The first instalment is scheduled to arrive in theatres this Diwali, with the second part expected to follow next year.

Alongside Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita, the film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Yash, Ravie Dubey, Sunny Deol, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Arun Govil, Vivek Oberoi and Kunal Kapoor.

With anticipation continuing to build around the ambitious adaptation, the Comic-Con panel offered fans a glimpse into the conviction driving the project, while Yash’s endorsement further underscored the faith the cast has in Ranbir Kapoor’s performance as one of mythology’s most iconic heroes.
