Fashion and video games coming together is nothing new, but Balenciaga’s partnership with SEGA is.
Announced Wednesday, SEGA revealed its partnership with Balenciaga, which will bring a collection of ready-to-wear pieces and merchandise, including a Japan-exclusive varsity jacket and long-sleeved T-shirt, to Sonic the Hedgehog fans.
The collection was available in select Balenciaga stores and online in Japan starting September 15th, ahead of its global release on September 22.
A breakdown of the collection per a SEGA press release reads:
A series oSeptember 22 | SEGA ready-to-wear pieces include a Japan-exclusive varsity jacket and long-sleeved T-shirt, each featuring original graphic artworks that fuse Balenciaga’s signature designs and SEGA iconography, including nods to Sonic the Hedgehog™, SEGA’s flagship character since 1991, whose presence expands further in a collection of its own.
A more widely distributed selection of merch, including nylon bombers, oversized T-shirts, zip-up hoodies, and brimmed caps, similarly utilizes Sonic’s name in heavy metal lettering, overlapping sticker-like Balenciaga logomarks in the SEGA font, and an image of the blue hedgehog mascot bursting from a screen as a hologram wearing Balenciaga Jet Sneakers.
The collaboration, unveiled in the context of Tokyo Game Show, a globally recognized physical convention and premier showcase of Japanese gaming culture, marks yet another milestone in the House’s endeavors in the world’s leading entertainment industry. Bringing together the House’s creative vision with SEGA’s storied legacy across arcade and console gaming, it explores a shared dialogue between heritage, innovation, and contemporary culture.
If You’re In Japan, You Should Make A Trip To Balenciaga’s Tokyo Aoyama Flagship Store
If you’re lucky to be in Japan for TGS, you can also stop by Balenciaga’s Tokyo Aoyama flagship and check out two SEGA Blast City arcade cabinets.
One cabinet will be playable, featuring the 1996 video game Sonic Fighters, while the other will be placed in the store’s display window.
So if you got some extra rings to spare, be sure to hit select Balenciaga stores worldwide and balenciaga.com on September 22 to nab you some pieces from the collection, because like Sonic, they will sell out fast.
