Chet Hanks has brought his long-running tofu beef with Eric André back to the timeline, and somehow Tom Hanks is catching strays again.
Shabba Hanks, shared footage of a run-in with the comedian at ComplexCon, apparently looking to revisit the bad blood between them. But stepping to the man behind The Eric Andre Show is a curious way to audition for tough-guy status.
As In Touch reported, Hanks posted the video on Monday, October 5. He approached André from behind and tapped him on the shoulder, with the comedian initially appearing pleased to see him before looking confused. While Hanks’ words were difficult to make out, André could be heard asking, “What are you talking about?”
André eventually shrugged and walked away, but not before directing a profane parting shot at Chet’s famous father, according to the outlet. Somehow, an attempt to revisit a disagreement between Chet and Eric became another opportunity to drag Tom into the conversation. This particular celebrity feud clearly has a very loose definition of keeping it between the people involved.
In his Instagram caption, Hanks claimed André had “NO MEMORY WHATSOEVER” of criticizing him publicly after he supposedly outshined the host on his own show. He also took a dig at André for allegedly traveling with four security guards and claimed the comedian later said his problem with Chet involved “mocking Caribbean culture” through his Jamaican accent. Hanks sarcastically described André as a “passionate cultural activist,” making his caption sound considerably more triumphant than a confused exchange and a walk-off warrant.
The public feud dates back to March 2023, ahead of Hanks’ appearance on the sixth season of The Eric Andre Show. As The Independent reported at the time, André told Rolling Stone that Hanks’ visit caused problems for the production. He accused Hanks of riding a motorcycle around the set and nearly knocking crew members off ladders, describing the behavior as dangerous. “He broke our crew,” André said, while also calling Hanks “emotionally disturbed” in the interview.
Hanks responded on Instagram with his own account, which The Independent also covered. He said he had watched episodes after receiving the invitation and decided to “match that energy.” Hanks acknowledged riding the dirt bike but downplayed the concern, saying he knew how to ride and had only popped a wheelie. He also argued that André was upset because he had outshined him on his own show.
“I thought you were funny and cool, but turns out you’re just a p***y,” Hanks said in that response. For a dispute that began with an appearance on a deliberately chaotic comedy series, it quickly became an argument about who was scared of whom. Apparently, agreeing to participate in the nonsense did not mean everyone agreed on where the nonsense should stop.
André answered with more trolling, jokingly challenging Hanks to take a DNA test proving Tom Hanks was his father, as Distractify later recounted. In June 2023, André told The Independent, “Tell him to say that s*** to my f***ing face.” By February 2024, he told Distractify, “I think that guy is legitimately mad at me,” adding that he could not remember why Hanks was angry.
That history explains why Chet wanted to revisit the issue when their paths crossed at ComplexCon. André has certainly contributed his share of insults, so this is hardly a case of one man doing all the trolling. Still, Hanks’ attempt to frame the encounter as a tough-guy victory is doing a lot of work for a conversation that ended with the comedian walking away.
Chet can dislike André’s comments without expecting a street-cred upgrade for confronting him. Making a comedian your opponent does not come with bonus points, and neither does counting his security guards afterward. If this is Shabba’s idea of settling the score, the tofu beef remains about as convincing as the Jamaican accent.
