Federal agents executed a search warrant at the Washington, DC, area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) on Monday morning for reasons that apparently had to do with a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork. Beyond that, there’s really no information available about why the raid was ordered, but if one were to speculate, there’s a long history of President Donald Trump attacking Omar for no other reason than because she’s Somali, and because she speaks out against him and his policies.
So, there’s that.
“Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement, according to Reuters.
To be clear, members of the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance and White House chief of staff Stephen Miller, have been talking about investigating Omar for immigration fraud, but no one in the administration has been able to specify a reason they suspect her of committing it.
Of course, this is the same JD Vance who launched a racist propaganda campaign about Haitians eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, based on social media rumors, and it’s the same Stephen Miller who has made dreaming of an America without black and brown foreigners his entire personality. But no, I’m sure they have plenty of evidence to back their suspicions, and this whole investigation isn’t just a xenophobic fishing expedition at all.
From the Associated Press:
“It certainly seems like something fishy is there, but everybody’s entitled to equal justice under the laws,” Vance told reporters in May. “So we’re going to investigate it. We’re going to take a look at it. If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime.”
In a separate interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, Vance said without offering evidence that “we actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America.”
He said that he and deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller had been discussing it and “trying to look at what the remedies are.”
“That’s the thing that we’re trying to figure out,” he said. “What are the legal remedies now that we know that she’s committed immigration fraud. How do you go after her? How do you investigate her? How do you actually do the thing? How do you build the case necessary to get some, some, some justice for the American people?”
So, back in May, Vance went from “it certainly seems” and “if we think” to “now that we know” all in the same conversation, and we’re to believe these raging white nationalists aren’t just making it all up as they go along?
