Last Friday (October 9), actor Lakeith Stanfield appeared at New York Comic-Con’s second day for a special reason – to share the news of his latest film that he’s starring in, the horror picture Molepeople.
The audience cheered when the Atlanta star was announced as the star of the latest horror movie from Blumhouse and Paramount Primal, and he joined director Rob Savage on stage to discuss his role.
The film will premiere in theatres on August 27, 2027. Molepeople also stars Emmy Award winning actor Ben Mendelson (Rogue One). The story follows a man who climbs down into the tunnels underneath New York City, and discovers a twisted society living there. Filming is set to begin in the United Kingdom late November or early December.
Savage described the movie as being “in the vein of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.” When asked about his feelings towards the role, Stanfield replied, “I’m excited to make things that can thrill people, get you to feel things.”
The executive producers include Ryan Turek, Tracy Rosenblum, screenwriter Nathan Elston, and Savage. J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of Paramount Primal are also on board as producers. Paramount Primal is the arm of the newly created Skydance corporation after the Warner Bros. merger that handles independent film releases.
For Lakeith Stanfield, this is another foray into a genre he’s seen success in. His first horror film was Jordan Peele’s hit film Get Out, and he had a small role in The Purge: Anarchy which was also produced by Jason Blum. Stanfield replaced actor Anthony Ramos, who was attached to the film back in 2024 but dropped out.
Mendelsohn’s most recent film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, the Casey Affleck-directed thriller Company. Stanfield was recently on-screen in the Boots Riley-directed comedy I Love Boosters, his second project with the activist and rapper after starring in Sorry To Bother You.
