Raheem DeVaughn Talks Ownership, R&B, and Healing on The Morning Hustle
R&B mainstay Raheem DeVaughn stopped by The Morning Hustle for a conversation that spanned business, music, and community. The DMV favorite opened up about his new project, Quiet Storm Lover Tome Un, and his decision to re-record his 20th-anniversary album, The Love Experience. For DeVaughn, the move is about ownership. Re-recording old work creates a new master, and he wants to lead by example for independent and legacy artists chasing control of their catalogs.
He also shared his love for where R&B stands today, praising fresh work from Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. DeVaughn makes music with intention, refusing to chase trends for quick money. “Music is only old to someone who hasn’t heard it yet,” he said, describing his focus on timeless songs that keep fans dancing for hours at deep-catalog shows.
Beyond the mic, DeVaughn stays active in the community. Through his Love Life Foundation and a partnership with Gilead Sciences on the “Care for the Culture” initiative, he urges people to get tested and know their status. He also spoke candidly about mental health, encouraging Black men to seek therapy. Losing his father, he shared, pushed him into the work that revealed his own strength.
Looking ahead, DeVaughn teased a City Winery tour bringing his classics to life live for fans.
